Overview

The Marangu Route, often referred to as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is one of the oldest and most popular routes for summiting Mount Kilimanjaro. Known for its gentle gradients and comfortable sleeping huts, the Marangu Route offers a more straightforward ascent compared to other routes on the mountain. Spanning 7 days, this route provides climbers with a well-trodden path to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Here’s an overview of what to expect on the 7-day Marangu Route

Itinerary

Day 0: Arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport.

Your adventure begins with a warm welcome upon arrival at the Kilimanjaro Airport, where you’ll be met by our Let’s Discover Africa’s representative and transferred to the Gran Melia Hotel in Arusha City, just 50 km from the airport. Gran Melia is a five star hotel with an exclusive view of Mount Meru, the second highest peak after Kilimanajro. Relax and unwind in style when you settle into your lavish lodge, nestled in the foothills of Mount Meru.

Day 1: Marangu Gate (1860m/6102 ft) to Mandara Hut (2700m/8858 ft)

The first day of the Kilimanjaro expedition begins with an early morning departure from the bustling town of Arusha. After breakfast, climbers are picked up from their accommodations and embark on a scenic drive to Marangu Gate. After a few hours of travel, we will  arrive at Marangu Gate. Here, climbers undergo registration  accompanied with our experienced guides and porters.. After registration formalities are done, climbers will venture deeper into the rainforest and encounter unique flora and fauna along the way. The day concludes at Mandara Hut, the first overnight stop, where climbers rest and acclimatize.

Day 2: Mandara Hut (2700m/ 8858 ft) to Horombo Hut (3700m/ 12139 ft)

After breakfast, climbers continue their ascent through the rainforest, gradually transitioning to heath and moorland. Emerging from the forest, trekkers are rewarded with panoramic views of Kilimanjaro’s slopes. The day ends at Horombo Hut, situated amidst the alpine desert landscape, where climbers rest and acclimatize.

Day 3: Acclimatization walk to Zebra Rocks (4020m /13189 ft), back to Horombo Hut (3700m / 12139 ft)

Day 3 on the Marangu Route is designated as an acclimatization day at Horombo Hut. This strategic break in the trek allows climbers to adjust to the increasing altitude and minimize the risk of altitude-related illnesses such as altitude sickness. Climbers have the option to hike to Zebra Rocks or explore the surrounding area. This day allows climbers to adjust to the increasing altitude and prepare for the days ahead.

Day 4: Horombo Hut (3700m/ 12139 ft) to Kibo Hut (4700m/ 15420 ft)

After a restful acclimatization day at Horombo Hut, climbers ascend steadily towards Kibo Hut, the final base camp before the summit push. Climbers traverse the barren landscape of the alpine desert, with Uhuru Peak looming in the distance. The day ends at Kibo Hut, where climbers rest and prepare for the challenging summit attempt.

Day 5: Summit Day – Kibo Hut to (4700m /15420 ft) Uhuru Peak (5895m /19340 ft) to Horombo Hut (3700m/ 12139 ft)

The adventure begins in the early hours, with climbers embarking on the steep ascent to Gilman’s Point. From Gilman’s Point, climbers continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After the summit attempt, climbers descend to Kibo Hut where they  have an opportunity to rest and recover before continuing their descent to Horombo Hut for dinner and overnight stay..

  • Accommodation: In the designed Hut

Day 6: Horombo Hut (3700m / 12139 ft) to Marangu Gate (1860m/6102 ft)

We rise up early for breakfast before we descend through lush rainforest to Marangu Gate.

At the Marangu gate, farewells are exchanged with guides and team members before departing for Arusha. After all the paperwork was done, we were awarded our Kilimanjaro certificate. We depart from Marangu Gate and transfer to our hotel in Arusha, carrying with us a sense of accomplishment and pride, knowing that we have conquered one of the world’s highest peaks and forged bonds that will last a lifetime.
