The Machame Route, often referred to as the “Whiskey Route,” is a popular choice for climbers seeking an adventurous and scenic ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro. Spanning 6 days, this route offers trekkers a challenging yet rewarding journey through diverse landscapes, from lush rainforests to alpine deserts, culminating in the summit bid to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on the continent of Africa. Itinerary
Day 0: Arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport.
Your adventure begins with a warm welcome upon arrival at the Kilimanjaro Airport, where you’ll be met by our Let’s Discover Africa’s representative and transferred to the Gran Melia Hotel in Arusha City, just 50 km from the airport. Gran Melia is a five star hotel with an exclusive view of Mount Meru, the second highest peak after Kilimanajro. Relax and unwind in style when you settle into your lavish lodge, nestled in the foothills of Mount Meru.

Day 1: Arusha to Machame Gate (1817m/5961 ft), Machame Camp (3021m/ 9911 ft)
After breakfast, our Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a morning departure from Arusha, Tanzania, where we take on a scenic drive to the Machame Gate approximately 86 km, the starting point of the Machame Route. After all formalities are completed, trekkers hike through dense rainforest, where they may encounter exotic wildlife and lush vegetation. The day ends at Machame Camp, the first overnight stop on the journey.

Day 2: Machame Camp (3021m/ 9911 ft) to Shira Camp (3830m/ 12566 ft)
Rising with the first light of dawn, we greet Day 2 of our Kilimanjaro expedition with eager anticipation. After a hearty breakfast to fuel our bodies for the day ahead, we bid farewell to Machame Camp and our ascent continued through the rainforest, gradually ascending towards the heath and moorland zones. Trekkers emerge from the forest into the expansive Shira Plateau, offering panoramic views of Kilimanjaro’s volcanic peaks. The day ends at Shira Camp, situated in a stunning alpine desert setting. Upon arrival at Shira Camp, our dedicated team has already set up our spacious tents, providing a comfortable and welcoming retreat after a day of adventure.

Day 3: Shira Camp (3830m / 1566 ft) to Barranco Camp (3972m/ 13031 ft) via Lava Tower
Today, our Kilimanjaro expedition takes us from the rugged beauty of Shira Camp to the breathtaking vistas of Barranco Camp, with ascending to Lava Tower for acclimatization. After a rest at Lava Tower, trekkers descend into the Barranco Valley, passing beneath the towering Barranco Wall. The day ends at Barranco Camp, located in a scenic valley beneath the imposing rock face. Our team ensures that our spacious tents are set up, providing a comfortable and welcoming retreat for the night.

Day 4: Barranco Camp (3972m /13031 ft) to Karanga Camp (3963m /13002 ft) to Barafu Camp (4640m /15223 ft)
After breakfast, we leave Barranco and continue on a steep ridge passing the Barranco Wall, to the Karanga Valley campsite. Then, we leave Karanga and hit the junction which connects with the Mweka Trail. We continue up to the Barafu Hut. At this point, you have completed the South Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. Here we camp, rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the summit day. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are to be seen from this position.

Day 5: Barafu Camp (4640m/ 15223 ft) to Summit (5895m/ 19340 ft) to Mweka Hut (3080m/10105 ft)
Around 2am midnight, we rise in the dead of night, surrounded by the crisp air of Barafu Camp, and prepare for the arduous journey ahead. Under the glow of headlamps, we begin our ascent from Barafu Camp, navigating the steep and rocky terrain in the darkness. With each step, our determination propels us forward, guided by the stars above and the promise of reaching Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa (5895m/ 19340 ft) above sea level.. As we reach Stella Point (18,600 ft), we will stop for a break and be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise we are ever likely to see (weather permitting). After conquering the summit of Kilimanjaro, we begin our descent towards Mweka Hut, our final overnight stop on the mountain.

Day 7: Mweka Camp (3080m/10105 ft) to Mweka Gate (1630 m/5348 ft) to Arusha
As the final day of our Kilimanjaro climbing expedition, we bid farewell to the majestic mountain and began our descent from Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate, where our adventure came to an end. Descending through the rainforest, we reach Mweka Gate, marking the end of the expedition. At the Mweka gate, farewells are exchanged with guides and team members before departing for Arusha. After all the paperwork was done, we were awarded our Kilimanjaro certificate. We depart from Mweka Gate and transfer to our hotel in Arusha, carrying with us a sense of accomplishment and pride, knowing that we have conquered one of the world’s highest peaks and forged bonds that will last a lifetime.
