Luckier are those who have experienced unparalleled beauty that Tanzania has to offer. But in case you haven’t made it to the list of the lucky ones, you have definitely heard songs of praises and wonder coming from those who have explored Tanzania.

The almost dream-like landscape is made a million times better with the wide variety of wildlife. Without wildlife, the sense of beauty will surely be less heightened. In making sure that wildlife stays the crucial part of the ecosystem, deliberate measures have been taken. Today, we appreciate some of the projects that are dedicated to maintaining the wildlife in Tanzania.Play

Tanzania Research and Conservation Organization (TRCO)

With conservation efforts primarily around pangolin, elephants, giraffes as well as Rondo Dwarf Galago, TRCO is playing a vital role in ensuring both wildlife and biodiversity is maintained.

Their efforts do not end in conservation, TRCO is also working towards scientific research, as well as empowering local communities with both knowledge and tools to make it possible to manage resources sustainably.

Southern Tanzania Elephant Program (STEP)

Elephants are among the most poached animals in the world.

Apart from poaching, elephant-human coexistence is also a sensitive topic that STEP is continuously addressing.

This non-profit founded in 2014, focuses on protecting elephant corridors, reducing human-elephant conflict, and empowering local communities to coexist peacefully with wildlife especially in Udzungwa and Ruaha-Rungwa

Tanzania Conservation and Community Empowerment Initiative (TACCEI)

At the core of TACCEI there are communities.

Communities are the driving forces to conservation under Tanzania Conservation and Community Empowerment Initiative. In most cases, lack of understanding and poverty are negative forces that impact the environment but through awareness and helping communities develop more sustainable livelihoods; TACCEI not only helps maintain biodiversity but also helps communities escape poverty which in turn makes it possible for conversation to thrive.

Tanzania Wildlife Initiative (TAWI)

Climate change has been one of the main culprits towards extinction of some animals.

The Tanzania Wildlife Initiative is dedicated to providing education around conservation, lead forest restoration initiatives as well as employing game fencing as a mitigation measure to human wildlife conflicts.

By addressing climate change and deforestation, TAWI is providing a suitable habitat for wildlife as they also make sure that the impacts of climate change are minimized.

Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Tanzania

The Wildlife Conservation Society Tanzania-specific program started in 2006 but the organization has been in the country since 1956.  Elephants, African wild dogs, abbots duiker are among animals the organization is actively conserving.

Apart from their extensive conservation efforts, the WCS also conducts survey, research and publishes its many findings. In their 2003 survey, WCS discovered Kipunji; East Africa’s rarest monkey and one of the world’s 25 most threatened primates.

Frankfurt Zoological Society

The Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS) has been active in the country for over 60 years. Its projects range from wildlife conservation and rangeland management to supporting local communities.

One of its most remarkable initiatives is the de-snaring project in the Serengeti. Since poaching remains one of the greatest threats to conservation, FZS teams conduct regular patrols across the Serengeti to locate and remove thousands of wire snares. The project is implemented in collaboration with the Tanzania National Parks and involves working with former poachers to survey the area and rescue live animals caught in snares.

Tanzania’s wildlife is not just part of the breathtaking landscapes, it’s part of Tanzania’s identity.

These projects and many others, show what’s possible when people come together for a common cause: communities, researchers, and tourism operators uniting to protect what makes this country truly special.

For travelers, the responsibility is to visit and support the wildlife’s chain of care; donating to organizations working day and night to maintain biodiversity.
