Hello, habari.

There’s no better advocate for “HAKUNA MATATA” than the Lion King and maybe you have picked it up already. It may surprise you to learn that, hakuna matata is not a word many Swahili speakers use. It’s more of a pop-culture phrase now. If you are planning to visit Africa; East Africa specifically, here are a few words and phrases to armor yourself with.

MAMBO VIPI

This one works well with younger people or people your age; however old you are. Mambo vipi is the Swahili equivalent of “what’s up”, it’s a great way to start a conversation and get to know people. If your vocabulary is limited, you can always go back to English or another language you are fluent in.

NAOMBA

May I……. May I have this, may I pass, may I, may I.

Swahili and its people are quite polite, Naomba should definitely be a new addition to your vocabulary. It doesn’t matter whether you are purchasing something or in a hurry and need a little space; naomba is the magic word.

POLE

Here is a tip, pole pairs well with samahani.

Let’s say you stepped on someone’s foot; you could use POLE to comfort them or SAMAHANI to express remorse. Pole and samahani therefore go hand in hand depending on what type of emotion you would like to express; think I am sorry vs I apologize.

HAPANA & ASANTE

NO, THANK YOU

Many offers around, from rides to vendors of different products. Hapana, asante is your timesaver. The best way to decline anything you are not really interested in and go about your day. Use Asante when expressing gratitude.

NAITWA

Introduce yourself in Swahili. Naitwa is simply my name, followed by your name.
